Weather in Tunisia
Tunisia’s climate is characterised by both Mediterranean and African climatic features. The northern and southern regions of the country have distinctly different climatic conditions.
Spring in Tunisia lasts from March to May, while summer lasts from June to September. Summer temperatures are at their highest in August. October to December is autumn in Tunisia and during this delightful season, the sun is mellow and the seawaters are warm.
Northern Tunisia has a Mediterranean type of climate characterised by hot and dry summers and mild winters. Summer in the southern region is far hotter because of the presence of the Sahara desert nearby. Southern summers are hot and arid, with the desert region always much hotter than other parts of Tunisia. The Sirocco winds raise the temperature of the region to the mid 40s (°C).
Droughts are quite common in southern Tunisia. Rainfall is sparse and sporadic with the average annual rainfall recorded at about 150 mm. Regions around the Sahara do not receive rain for years together and are very dry. Northern Tunisia, on the other hand, receives an annual rainfall of about 1,000 mm.
